This is the season our forbears put up summer's bounty, canned fruits and vegetables, jams, jellies and preserves. Supermarkets were rare on the prairie. Take Grandma's favorite recipe to start, or pick one from a cookbook and make it your own. Libraries have extensive cookbooks, or go online for thousands of recipes. Canning equipment and a quaint, simple hand-written label with your name, email and phone number plus DBA are essentials. Also, check the local health department for specific home food preparation-for-sale rules. You can do jams, chutneys or other seasonal fruit condiments, adding a special ingredient that brands it purely your own unique creation. Offer to gourmet groceries and even create a membership club eventually. Big Business from little jelly jars can grow.
